UNITED NATIONS, New York – The Government of Spain has made a significant commitment to advancing the rights and choices of women and girls by contributing €5 million in flexible resources for UNFPA, the United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency. This funding emphasizes Spain’s dedication to achieving gender equality.

Core resources are the foundation of UNFPA’s work. They are essential to support the acceleration and scale of action needed to respond effectively to the needs of women and girls across 150 countries. These resources are even more vital amid mounting crises and challenges to reproductive rights.

Provided flexibly, this type of funding enables UNFPA to sustain operations and scale interventions where they are needed most. From delivering life-saving assistance in refugee camps to supporting marginalized communities, core resources ensure that UNFPA can act before, during and after crises. Core resources also equip UNFPA to make strategic long-term investments in changes such as public policies centred on human rights.

Spain’s comprehensive support

Spain is also a key contributor to the UNFPA’s Supplies Partnership, which delivers essential reproductive health supplies to women and girls in more than 50 countries. These efforts rely on core resources to ensure access, mobility, and an on-the-ground presence that make the delivery of supplies possible.

In addition, Spain is a leader on disability inclusion. As the sole contributor to UNFPA’s We Decide programme, which promotes social inclusion and the protection of human rights for women and young persons with disabilities in crises, Spain provides critical support via flexible funding to the Humanitarian Thematic Fund.

Spain’s latest investment sets a powerful example for other donors and partners: As the world faces growing uncertainties, sustained contributions to core resources are more important than ever to protect women and girls, uphold their rights, and ensure their access to life-saving care.
