Cyclone Chido struck Cabo Delgado and Nampula provinces in northern Mozambique on December 15, 2024, resulting in 120 deaths and 868 injuries. The cyclone affected an estimated 453,970 people, with Cabo Delgado and Nampula accounting for 98% of the total affected population. Preliminary findings from Multi-Sectoral Initial Rapid Assessments reveal extensive destruction, with 95% of houses, 73% of schools, 62% of farmlands, 55% of markets, and 44% of health care facilities affected.

UNFPA Mozambique’s response to Cyclone Chido involved prepositioning 11,239 dignity kits, 35 tents for temporary health facilities, and 13 reproductive health kits. In the immediate aftermath of the cyclone, UNFPA distributed 520 dignity kits with information on gender-based violence (GBV) and protection from sexual exploitation and abuse (PSEA), established three temporary health facilities, and supported Chiure District Hospital and the containerized clinic in Metuge to ensure continued maternal health services. UNFPA highlights the urgent need for additional funding to restore health facilities, provide essential supplies, and address GBV risks.
