In December 2024, Mali’s Rapid Response Mechanism reported 10 alerts, including three flood-related incidents affecting over 12,000 people, mostly women and children. UNFPA is actively involved in assessing and addressing the Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) needs arising from these crises. The GBV Information Management System recorded an alarming 217% increase in violations against women and girls from January to September 2024 compared to 2023. Additionally, the Displacement Tracking Matrix identified 378,363 internally displaced persons due to insecurity, military operations, and floods, with 58% being women and children. This number, combined with the existing refugee population, represents a significant 54% increase in displacement since December 2023.
In December, UNFPA Mali provided assistance to 9,649 people, focusing on sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and gender-based violence (GBV) services. Mobile teams reached 3,952 people, while One-Stop Centers in Gao and Tombouctou assisted 164 survivors. UNFPA also engaged community leaders in GBV prevention and supported community radios in Menaka. Additionally, 4,000 dignity kits were procured for high-risk areas, and 21 Inter-Agency Reproductive Health Kits were delivered to the Ministry of Health and Social Development, supporting 2,205 cases of obstetric surgery and complication management. Capacity building was provided to civil society and community radios on GBV, SRH, and community mobilization. Advocacy with community leaders, identification of women-led organizations, and orientation for the GBV sub-cluster were conducted. A workshop and the 16 Days of Activism campaign were launched. Training was held for the SRH working group on SRH of Adolescents and Young People.
