The present report responds to Decision 2011/101 of the forty-fourth session of the Commission on Population and Development that the special theme of the forty-sixth session in 2013 would be “New Trends in Migration: Demographic Aspects”. The report examines the programmatic response of the United Nations Population Fund at global, regional and country levels to the new trends in migration. The focus is on international migration and includes UNFPA’s work in the areas of global advocacy, capacity development, policy dialogue, data and research, and awareness raising.

International migration is a global issue and is a central part of the global development agenda. It presents both opportunities for, and challenges to, the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. The growth and diversity of current migration flows clearly demonstrate that migration can no longer be considered periperal to the mainstream of population and development policy. There is an emerging consensus that migration issues must figure prominently in the post-2015 development discourse.
