The humanitarian situation in Chad continues to worsen, driven by conflicts, climate change, and health crises. The influx of over 708,000 Sudanese refugees and 222,000 Chadian returnees, compounded by severe flooding affecting nearly two million people, has strained already limited resources. Women and girls are disproportionately impacted, with limited access to essential services, increased risks of gender-based violence (GBV), and maternal health challenges. Internal displacement due to armed violence in the Lac region further exacerbates the crisis, leaving many without access to basic services like reproductive health care and protection.
UNFPA has prioritized life-saving sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and GBV services in the most affected areas. Efforts include deploying 148 humanitarian midwives, distributing reproductive health kits to serve nearly 33,000 people, and supporting 27 safe spaces for women and girls. Over 35,000 people received SRH services, and more than 4,000 benefited from GBV prevention and response activities. Key interventions included antenatal and postnatal care, family planning, psychosocial support, and awareness-raising campaigns. Despite logistical challenges due to floods, UNFPA continues to provide critical supplies, including dignity kits and contraceptives, and enhance local capacity through training and collaboration with partners.
The response is severely underfunded, with only 40.7% of the $21.1 million appeal funded by October 2024. A $12.5 million funding gap hinders the ability to expand essential services and meet growing humanitarian needs. UNFPA appeals for sustained international support to protect the rights, health, and dignity of women and girls in Chad’s escalating crisis.
