Three Winners Announced for the '1 in 7 Billion' Film Competition

  • 02 April 2012

Three short films capturing three very different perspectives on the opportunities and challenges of today’s complex world have been voted as winners in the ‘1 in 7 Billion’ film contest.

One, A Common Guy by Pedro Diaz, deals with the desperation of growing old alone and impoverished. Another, A True Dream by Bao Long, conveys the frustration and excitement of environmental awareness and activism. The third, Scarecrow by Cassio Pereira, deals with the yearning of a young farm girl to attend school like her brother.

These three films, as well as seven other finalists in the competition, can be viewed on the 7 Billion Actions website. The contest aimed to inspire people everywhere to use their talents to explore one of the seven key issues targeted by 7 Billion Actions:

  • Poverty and breaking the circle of inequality
  • Empowerment and progress of women and girls
  • Young people
  • Reproductive health and rights
  • Healthy environmental and healthy people
  • Aging
  • Urbanization-planning for growth.

The competition was produced by UNFPA in collaboration with the Foundation 10.12.48, an international organization dedicated to human rights. More than 150 short films (maximum 10 minutes), representing all regions of the world, were submitted, and their quality made the judging process difficult, said Christian Delsol, one of the three members of the jury.

“It was refreshing to see how filmmakers from around the world communicate universal themes," he said. "These were personal narratives yet they are part of our ethos. All the films were good. Choosing was difficult, and the jury believes its selection capture the variety and strength of the submissions.  I encourage those who are interested in film to view all ten of the films that made the final cut.”

The final three winners were those that received the most online votes. The 7 Billion Actions initiative and the Foundation 10.12.48 would like to thank all who submitted films for contributing your inspiring stories to this short film competition, as well as those who participated in the voting.
