Women living in rural, marginalized communities are among the most vulnerable, often facing limited access to essential services, including health care, social services and justice. Women who experience illness, pregnancy complications, poverty or violence may have nowhere to turn. When these services become available, however, women and girls can thrive.
UNFPA works to expand access to life-saving health care, in particular reproductive health care, including prenatal care, safe childbirth services, and contraceptive counselling and supplies, and to improve access to justice and services for survivors of gender-based violence.
This event, part of the 62nd session of the Commission on the Status of Women will address practices and programmes that can empower rural women and girls by addressing the issue of gender-based violence and access to health, justice and social services.
