The 2022 Humanitarian Action Overview highlights the world’s biggest crises for women and girls and the urgent need to increase international humanitarian assistance to alleviate human suffering and meet rising needs.
In 2022, UNFPA is appealing for an estimated US$835 million to provide life-saving health and protection services to over 54 million women, girls and young people in 61 countries. Emphasis is placed on preparedness, early action and response to save the lives of women and girls and young people in emergencies, upholding dignity and human rights, reinforcing hope for the future.
UNFPA’s humanitarian support to countries focuses on strengthening capacities and systems for the provision of essential, life-saving sexual and reproductive health and gender-based violence services, including mental health and pyschosocial support. We remain committed to working closely and listening to women and girls and young people as relief is delivered.
Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, in 2021 UNFPA and its partners reached more than 29 million women of reproductive age with sexual and reproductive health services, and approximately 2.4 million people with gender-based violence services, including through 12,000 UNFPA-supported safe houses.
Afghanistan and Ethiopia and other humanitarian crises have been a stark reminder of just how quickly hard-won gains for women and girls can unravel in the face of a crisis. As needs rise, there is a need to do more – and to do it better – to ensure that the rights, roles and agency of women and girls in humanitarian and fragile settings are at the front and centre of our humanitarian response.
